Identification of Species
Although we've attempted to identify animal species accurately, we've stuck to using common names. We don't want to mislead people with a false sense about the scientific accuracy of our identifications. We are not trained biologists.
Shorebirds are most easily differentiated by breeding plumage. Unfortunately, the shorebirds we saw were not decked out for breeding. We've tried to indicate instances where we were particularly unsure of our identifications by including the remark, "(we think)," in picture captions.
The common names we chose came from Birds of Australia Seventh Edition, by Ken Simpson and Nicolas Day with Peter Trusler, Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, USA (2004).
